Description Alicia anisopetala, known as Black Ayahuasca, is part of the Malpighiaceae family, the same family as the legendary Banisteriopsis caapi. It is said to contain natural beta-carboline harmala alkaloids like those found in caapi vine. These alkaloids are natural MAO inhibitors. Native to Peru, this plant flourishes in a rich and moist soil located in an area that is partly shade and partly sunlit. Being a vine it will prefer to climb over something like a fence or a trellis. Alicia’s are more cold tolerant that B. caapi, making this vine a better choice for southern non-tropical states. We find this vine to be relatively vigorous and easy to care for. Common name. Black Ayahuasca; Black Yage; Black Caapi: Black Vine; Ayahuasca Thunder; Ayahuasca Trueno. Specifications. 50mm Pot Size Cutting Grown Plant Ideal Growing Conditions. Alicia anisopetala prefers filtered sunlight in a humid sub-tropical to tropical climate. However, once established Alicia can tolerate colder temperatures than Caapi’s. Requires a free draining soil. Is drought and frost intolerant. Requires a climbing frame. Pruning: Light pruning is recommended to manage its size and encourage branching, especially when grown in pots or small spaces. Trim back any leggy or dead growth to promote healthy new growth. Pests and Diseases: Alicia’s are typically not prone to serious pest infestations, however monitor your plant for pests like aphids, scale or spider mites. Treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap, Eco Oil or Neem Oil Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage. Fertiliser: We recommend and use Yates Nutricote Standard Black 270 Day Controlled Release Fertiliser however any good quality slow release fertiliser will do. We also stock an Australian Made liquid indoor fertiliser The Plant Runner Indoor Plant Food which is easy to use and odourless We cannot send plants to Western Australia & Tasmania due to restrictions. We cannot ship this species Internationally. We strongly recommended to select Express Post shipping for all plant orders to minimise the transit time. Interested in Ayahuasca plants?
